Our Mission: To promote plein air painting in the State of Washington by providing painting, learning, and exhibiting opportunities.

  • Painting the Wild Pacific Coast

Eleven artists from Plein Air Washington Artists traveled to the Pacific Rim peninsula on Vancouver Island for five days of painting. We arrived in bright sunshine and our first day was glorious as we explored the rugged coastline around the Ucluelet lighthouse. Although the forecast had looked good ahead of time, by Tuesday light rain descended. I wish you could have seen the sight Tuesday afternoon as five artists put up their umbrellas and painted along a narrow embankment. Their subject, a bright red boathouse on the harbor, brought much needed color to the gray of sea and sky. I think all would agree we had a great time painting in spite of the weather. Thursday we found sunshine in Tofino. Friday was intermittant rain, but again with umbrellas up and spirits high we kept right on painting. As always, one of the best parts of the trip is the inspiration that comes from painting with other dedicated artists. We're already planning another special trip for next year - watch for details in PAWA newsletters.
